Depends on severity: A primary care doctor or an ob-gyn doctor can evaluate to see if Progesterone is needed to help stop a prolonged period. The medication can be given if the period is heavy or is not lightening up by itself. If prolonged and heavy, the danger is in getting anemic. The doctors can follow-up with evaluations to be sure there is not some other gynecological problem going on.
