How long does shingles last and what are key signs of postherpetic neuralgia?

A and B: A. Duration 7 to 14 days, average 10 b. Severe burning pain in distribution of rash which may persists for days to months or years, long after rash has resolved. In the absence of a definite skin rash at any time, diagnosis of post-herpetic neuralgia is suspect.

Shingles: Most cases of shingles last 3 to 5 weeks. Usually 1 to 5 days after one experiences pain/burning in a specific area, a rash with blisters appears. This may take a week to 10 days to dry up & become crusty. Usually within a couple of weeks the scabs resolve. REF: https://www.nia.nih.gov/health/shingles#catch. Postherpetic neuralgia - pain persists well after blisters are gone.
