Old blood: Your uterus is evacuating it's lining as well as the blood that comes from the shedding process. The blood has been collecting in the uterus and thus changes color - that's why it is brown and not bright red.

See your doctor: Brown discharge is typically light bleeding. Irregular bleeding/brown discharge is common in the first 3 months of birth control pills, and can also occur if you miss pills.
