Old blood: Your uterus is evacuating it's lining as well as the blood that comes from the shedding process. The blood has been collecting in the uterus and thus changes color - that's why it is brown and not bright red.

See your doctor: Brown discharge is typically light bleeding. Irregular bleeding/brown discharge is common in the first 3 months of birth control pills, and can also occur if you miss pills. But, there are lots of causes of bleeding, including pregnancy, stds, other infections, polyps, or fibroids. You should discuss with your doctor.
