Why do the bone plates in the skull not fuse before birth?

Two reasons...: During a vaginal delivery, the unfused skull bones can shift as necessary, making the head more malleable for passage through the birth canal. The unfused bones also allow room for the baby's brain to grow during early life. The bones in the skull will fuse after about 12 to 18 months.
