Unknown: Abdominal wall hernia repair has no anatomical or physiological relation to the peripheral or central nervous system responsible for taste and smell. It may be somehow related to the general anesthesia that is used for the majority of hernia repairs in the us. I would anticipate that it will be self limited, but can't really speculate the length of time it will take to improve.

Very unusual: I can't think of any direct correlation of hernia repair with taste or smell. However, this may be a possible side effect of medications. I recommend seeing your family physician and having this checked out.
