1 year: In general, you are not fully through menopause until you go a full year without a menses. If you have a period within a year, then you start counting again from that last period. After a year has passed, you can safely stop using birth control without fear of pregnancy. Also, after that time, any new bleeding is considered abnormal and should be evaluated by your doctor.
