How much long do i have to be without a monthly cycle before being considered post menopausal?

One year: It is not officially considered menopause until one year with no menstrual cycle. A doctor can also check your hormone levels to verify. If you are experiencing symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes and vaginal dryness, talk to your doctor about available treatment options.

1 year: In general, you are not fully through menopause until you go a full year without a menses. If you have a period within a year, then you start counting again from that last period. After a year has passed, you can safely stop using birth control without fear of pregnancy. Also, after that time, any new bleeding is considered abnormal and should be evaluated by your doctor.
