Maybe not: Ulcers on the gums are not usually herpetic but rather canker sores (aphthous ulcers). They do not transmit from person to person.

Caution: Not to worry...Actually most people have been exposed to oral herpes in their lifetime. It does mean that when you have an active lesion that you are contagious both to others, and to yourself. When a sore is present, don't swap spit with others, and refrain from any oral contact, sexual or otherwise. Also don't touch your eye, a cut, or your own genitalia without washing hands.
