Depends: It does take a while for all the symptoms to go away, however you should have noticed some relief. If you had a positive strep test and you're getting worse, call your doctor. If your strep test was negative then it may have been viral, and it will take 9 to 10 days for yoursymptoms to clear. If you're getting worse, again, call your doctor's office and talk to the nurse as a start.

Depends: Most cases of tonsillitis are viral, so penicillin won't help. It should be used only when lab tests confirm that it's caused by strep. In thoses cases it doesn't really speed recovery; it just prevents complications.
