Avoidance is first : If you are avoiding things that cause your heartburn, and you still have symptoms, then you'll need to try an acid blocker. First try antacids, like Tums and if this doesn't work, try histamine 2 blocker, like zantac (ranitidine). If that doesn't work, you can escalate to prilosec. If this doesn't even work, see your doctor. If the symptoms happen with exertion, see your doctor before doing anything else.
