Breakdown in mucosa: Ulcerative colitis is an autoimmune disease that is characterized by ulcers, or open sores in the lining (mucosa) of the large intestine. The main symptom of active disease is usually constant diarrhea mixed with blood, of gradual onset. Over time, the inflammation can increase the risk of colon cancer. Treatment is with anti-inflammatory drugs, immunosuppression with periodic colonoscopy.
