Upper back pain: Given your age it is unlikely to be anything serious. More than likely it is a muscle issue. Keep active, if you have great concern see your doctor for an evaluation.

Dysfunctional rib?: Could be referred pain from some organ, but unlikely.Key is the pain w/ stretching out & lying flat.Ribs should rise & fall w/ inhaling/exhaling, but when they lock down so they can't rise with inhalation or stretching/straightening, pain-sharp or severe aching-results, usually in upper back.Vertebrae may also be involved.A good osteopathic exam may find the cause & gentle manipulation may fix it.
