A member asked:

Is trichomonas a bacterial std and can it be detected by a urine culture and sensitivity test?

No: It's a protozoan, cannot be cultured, is generally easy to diagnose on physical exam, and the microbes can be seen in the fluid taken from the vagina. It also causes prostatitis and generally treatment is empirical without finding the bug.

Not bacterial: It is from a protozoan parasite. When tested via a urine sample – it should be a 1st void sample – the first 20 to 30 mm of urine of initial stream should be used. The person should not have urinated for at least an hour prior. Most STD screens don’t include Trichomoniasis.
