You are right to...: ...Be concerned; that is an inadequate weight gain. Would be nice to know what the dr tells her, of course, but at this point my recommendation would be to pump and meadure - if the breast milk production is low, it may need to be supplemented.

Breast or bottle: I have concern when a vegan breast feeds a child because the breast milk may be quite deficient is those vegans that do not have balanced nutrition. Two of the most anemic kids I have consulted on came from such settings. The dr should closely monitor for anemia & encourage formula if mom's diet is marginal.Soy formulas allow baby to stay vegan if mom desires.
