Joint Pain Relief: In my opinion arthrocentesis has rare indications, mostly for localized pain in the joint not muscular and only short history of limited opening. It is a blind procedure and the purpose is to decrease inflammation in the joint and lubricate the joint but not to change disc position. Often also a splint and physical therapy is recommended. The goal is reduction of inflammation and joint pain.

Not a good situation: Surgery in the joint is not well responding in many cases. But if necessary do what you must but getting a second opinion would not be a bad idea.

Improved function : The goal of arthrocentesis is improved jaw function; most of the times the disc position does change but sometimes it may not.

Treat the cause: The general concern about TMJ problems is the ball of the lower jaw is what compromises the structure of the cartilage and causes the displacement/dislocation. You have to treat all of the problems, not just the effects. The problem will return if you leave the cause and treat the effects. Why was the disc dislocated?

May be helpful: Arthrocentesis may be helpful in your case. You should notice relief right away If not, the next step would be arthroscopic surgery of the TMj.
