Not necessarily: Therapies are available that completely destroy or remove thyroid gland. Thyroid gland can be destroyed by radioactive ablation with I131 or removed by surgery, a thyroiidectomy. Patient takes thyroid hormone supplement to keep thyroid levels normal.

Depends: Without treatment Graves hyperthyroidism resolves on its own in only 10% of patients after 20 years. It is also heterogeneous and some people go into spontaneous remission. Most people need definitive treatment with radioactive iodine or surgery. Graves eye disease is permanent but can be surgically fixed.
