Varies: A small pneumothorax can resolve on its own without treatment but if it's of sufficient size to cause pain or shortness of breath then a tube or catheter is placed into the pleural space to evacuate air and re-expand the lung. This sometimes has to stay in place for several days.

Depends: If small and related to a medical procedure it may require no treatment. If it has occurred spontaneously it may require a chest tube drainage. Almost all penetrating traumas require a chest tube or surgery repair.

Depends: If it is a first time pneumothorax (ptx), and it is small, it can be watched. The usual treatment for a sizable ptx is drainage by a chest tube. If the ptx is recurrent, or due to an underlying lung disease, you need surgery to stitch the defect.
