Control the hormones: It is fairly common for women to have flares of acne with menstrual periods due to hormonal fluctuations. This can sometimes be evened out with birth control pills or the effect of the hormones can be blocked with a drug called spironolactone. Antibiotics can be used to decrease the inflammation and topical medications such as benzoyl peroxide can be used to decrease bacteria and blackheads.
