Delayed effects: Polio causes deterioration of motor neurons in the spinal cord. In survivors, the condition stabilizes until much later in life. Then either through nerve cell attrition and/.Or overuse, the surviving neurons are overtaxed and either reduce functional capacity or actually die. This results in exaggerated fatigue and weakness, usually in muscles originally affected in the acute episode.
