Through urethra: Genital area and tip of urethra is disinfected and urethral tract anesthetized by Lidocaine or another local anesthetic. Urinary catheter is than slowly advanced in urethra till in enters the bladder.

Catheters: The urethra is exposed and the he catheter is then lubricated after cleaning the area around the urethral opening. The catheter is then gently inserted through the urethra until it is in the bladder.
