No: Sadness is a healthy reaction to some negative events, depression in a clinical manifestation that may come whether or not one is actually experiencing "sad" events but has more to do with how things are interpreted in the brain. Sadness is normal, depression needs treatment. The most effective treatment is a combination of psychotherapy and medications. The sooner it's treated the better.
