Chemotherapy: This type of leukemia, apl is a medical emergency. It is treated with standard chemotherapy for leukemia plus a medication called atra (all-trans retinoic acid). In apl, the white cells stop maturing at the promyelocytic phase so atra allows them to mature and the chemotherapy destroys the leukemia. This is probably one the more curable leukemias. Then atra is taken for 2 years as maintenance.

See below...: Acute promyelocytic leukemia, even though a form of blood cancer and, more exactly, of acute myeloid leukemia, is a very treatable condition with good prognosis; however, the initial phase of therapy after establishing the diagnosis is critical and has to be managed by and experienced hematologist/oncologist in order to avoid possible complications, the most important being dic.
