Rarely Used Today: Procaine is the generic name for the old dental local anesthetic novacaine. It had a much higher incidence of true allergic reactions than Lidocaine or xylocaine (lidocaine) that is most popular today. Procaine had the advantage of longer action and no need for using Epinephrine (adrenaline) with the occasional side effect of speeding up the pulse.
