2-3 hours: Most of the time it takes 2-3 hours for novacaine to wear off. Sometimes it can seem a bit longer. There are some brands that last twice as long.

It varies.: Novocaine is rarely used today. The most common local anesthetic is lidocaine, and the most common formulation is packaged with epinephrine. Lidocaine with Epinephrine will usually provide deep anesthesia to the nerve of a tooth for 45 minutes and for the soft tissue, lips, gums, etc, for twice that. Anesthetic without Epinephrine wears off quicker. Some anesthetics, like marcaine, can last hours.

Give it time: Novocaine is a local anesthetic; it is supposed to make the area numb. Depending on your metabolism and how much was used, novocaine shots typically wear off in about 3-6 hours. Sometimes novocaine is mixed with Marcaine or another local anesthetic, and may take up to 12 hours to completely wear off. If you are worried, check with the doctor who did the procedure you were numbed up for.

Time is the antidote: Most of the time dental anesthetics wear off with time. Depending on the type, concentration and amount of Epinephrine in the anesthetic will give you a clue how long it will take. Sometimes 45 minutes to several hours. There is now on the market an anesthetic reversing agent that can be injected into the same area but...It is expensive and many dentists don't have it available.
