A member asked:

When will my amitriptyline for migraines begin to take effect?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

VARIES: Amitriptyline is from an older class of antidepressant called the tricyclic for the 3 benzene rings that make up its structure. Can be very efficacious for migraine prevention. Side effects are sleepiness and dry mouth to name a few. Would take at bedtime and start low like 10mg and go up slowly. May help within one week or take up to 2 - 3 months depending on the dosing schedule.
