About 1 week: Bronchitis is inflammation of the main bronchial tubes of the lungs. When they are inflamed, they cause coughing and sometimes shortness of breath. Most of the time its viral.

Depends...: If you have acute bronchitis, the cough may be due to bronchospasm, especially if it increases as your other symptoms improve. See your doctor because this can be treated with inhalers. If you have chronic bronchitis, you need to see your doctor so your treatment can be adjusted. If you smoke, you need to quit today and your doctor can help with this as well.
