A member asked:

Why would an elderly person be more prone to skin infections than a younger woman?

Impaired immunity: Skin cells divide more slowly and skin begins to thin with age. Skin retains less moisture making it dry, scaly, and appear wrinkled. It loses its elasticity and instead of springing back, starts to sag. It loses its ability to repair itself and wounds take longer to heal. The skin becomes more fragile and less able to recover from injury and more prone to infections.

Barrier: Think about how much sun damage and how much thinner the skin is on an elderly person. Your skin is your barrier. As you age, the barrier weakens, it is thinner - your infection risk goes up because the barrier is weaker and has less defense against the outside.
