What causes an ingrown toenail?

See below. : Most commonly nail being cut too short or incorrectly. Toenails should normally be cut straight across and not with rounded corners. They should not be cut lower than skin. Other common causes are trauma, tight shoes or heredity. Some congenitial conditions or syndromes may cause this as well.

Many possibilities: Ingrown nail could develop due genetics or due to tight shoes, trauma, fungal toenail infections, and incorrect cutting of the nails. One should always try to cut the nails strait across to avoid leaving an embedded nail spicule. If you develop pain or redness get it looked at by a professional.
