FDA Approval: According to the food & drug administration, a drug must be proven to be both safe and effective for its' indicated use(s). For psychotropic drugs, that may mean studies have been done in which the drug is either significantly more effective than a placebo, or it is as effective as another drug already approved. It can be unethical to test with placebos for certain patient populations.
