Diagnosis: This is a common question asked by patients. How do you know your paranasal sinuses are congested? Could it really be your nose is congested. So the answer to your question is a specific diagnosis must be made. Otc meds such as Robitussin or Mucinex (guaifenesin) my help but certainly allergy needs to be ruled out. The gold standard to prove that you have sinusitis is a cat scan.

Home Sinus Remedies: Saline nasal flushes, 1 tsp salt per 16 ounces water is a recipe. Burning after use? Add 1/4 tsp baking soda. Many saline flushes are available over the counter. Hot steam from long, hot showers or a wet sauna are also helpful. Over the counter decongestants, such as pseudoephrine also help. Mucinex-d - Guaifenesin may help also.

Sinus Congestion: Oral decongestants, such as pseudoephedrine, and saline nasal flushes may help relieve sinus congestion. Most of the otc antihistamines combine a decongesant, such as Allegra d, zyrtec d, and Claritin d. Prescription nasal steroid sprays work the best. Go see your primary care health provider to discuss what's best for you.

Moisture: If you want to avoid medications, try to maintain good nasal health by using saline irrigations and keeping an appropriate moisture level in the air you breathe. Unfortunately, this won't help if you have a physical issue blocking the drainage of your sinuses. Finally, make sure that the problem really is sinus-related and not another kind of headache.
