Removal of uterus: This a surgical procedure under general anesthesia to remove the uterus. It can be done open, vaginally, laparoscopically, or with robotic assistance. It's usually done for bleeding abnormalities due to tumors or cancer, for prolapse, pain, or other abnormalities.

Removing the uterus: The hyster is the uterus. Ectomy means to cut out. So hysterectomy is the cutting out of the uterus. The ovaries are the oophors, so removal of the ovaries is an oophorectomy. Technically a full hysterectomy would be the removal of the entire uterus, however many people believe that full hysterectomy implies removal of the uterus and the ovaries.
