Bursitis: The most common cause would be inflammation of a small sac outside the hip called a bursa. Bursitis cause tenderness to touch in the area and sometimes pain with stair climbing. Bruises or other injuries could cause the pain. The only well to be sure would be to be examined by your doctor.
