Dry nails: Nails, like skin, are prone to dryness if exposed to a harsh environments. Try to be gentler on your hands, and within 5 min of bathing or washing apply a thick hand cream to the nails and cuticles several times a day. If these simple measures don't work see a derm for a clinical evaluation and possibly blood work for anemia, thyroid, and other health issues.

Brittlel nails: Crumbling or brittle nails can occur due to lengthy contact with nail polish, detergents, chemicals, water. Other possible causes: fungal infections, lichen planus, nail psoriasis, & thryoid problems. Wearing gloves when hands have excessive water exposure or use of topical moisturizer can help.
