See below: An aneurysm is a bulge or abnormal widening in the wall of an artery due to weakness in the wall. They are often asymptomatic. Since arteries are a system under pressure, high blood pressure may make them worse. High cholesterol & smoking affect some aneurysms. Rupture of one in the brain can cause stroke; rupture of one in the aorta is surgical emergency.

A weakened area: We are not quite sure what actually causes an AAA to form in some people. The leading thought is that the aneurysm may be caused by inflammation in the aorta, which may cause its wall to weaken or break down. Most believe that this inflammation can be associated with atherosclerosis (also called hardening of the arteries) or risk factors for atherosclerosis, such as high blood pressure and smoking.
