Yes: Herpes type 1 and 2 viruses cause recurrent sores after the initial infections. When there are no sores, the virus is usually inactive, dormant, in remission. It is not predictable when the next recurrence will happen, but stress on the body, getting other illnesses, a lowering of the immune system, etc... Can make recurrences more likely. Antiviral medication is available for treatment.

Herpes: A person never "goes into remission" with herpes. One you are exposed to herpes you will always carry the virus. The virus will be inside your nerve and only come out periodically. The first outbreak a person has is generally the worst one. After this it is very very variable. We can try to prevent this from happening with pills if you want to take them. See your md or dermatologist for more info.
