A natural astringent: Witch hazel is a very effective natural astringent (substance that tends to shrink tissues when applied topically) to treat symptoms of external hemorrhoidal disease. It is particularly effective for itching and burning symptoms. It may ameliorate light bleeding as well from external hemorrhoids, but any rectal bleeding should be evaluated by a physician and may lead to colonoscopy.
