Heart lung machine: The blood in the heart is diverted in to a machine that oxygenates the blood and returns it to the body. The heart is also infused with chemicals or cooled , this is called cardioplegia. This then makes the heart still , and easy to work on. Some techniques use surgery on beating heart but not the typical procedure.
