The drugs did it: A common side effect of the drugs used to treat hbp is impotence. It is not usually attributed to the hbp directly as the problem usually gets better when the drugs are stopped.

Yes : Yes it is more common than you think. High blood pressure leads to many complications including heart disease, kidney disease, strokes, and many other vascular / circulation complications such as impotence. This may be difficult to treat because some the medication that treat high BP also can make the impotence worse.
