Does depression come on suddenly?

Generally not: The emotion of sadness can certainly come on suddenly, in response to loss or hurt of some kind. The illness of depression is very different. Depression involves changes in energy, mood, sleep, appetite, and interest -- and generally involves a more gradual worsening and feeling of stuckness. The person needs help to move through. Sadness is painful, but can usually relent on its own.

DEPRESSION: Sometimes yes, sometimes no. The most responsible answer I can give you is that it depends on the patient.

Agree with Dr. B: Depression can come on suddenly. However, mental health is not a do it yourself issue and you should consult a psychiatrist at your earliest as early intervention may prevent unnecessary suffering.
Wish you good health!
