Nodal sampling.: A sentinel lymph node is felt to be the first lymph node(s) which material from a specific location will drain to. By sampling that type of node and finding it negative the likelihood of other nodes upstream being positive is very unlikely and the need for extensive sampling is minimized and long term complications are decreased.
