Yes: You will be at an increased risk of infection by encapsulated bacteria. These are strep pneumonia, hemophilus influenza, and neisseria meningitidis. There is a small lifetime risk of post-splenectomy sepsis which can be deadly. It is important to be vaccinated against the above organisms and maintain those vaccines through your lifetime.
