At conception: A baby's gender is determined at the time of conception. Depending on the tests done fetal sex can be determined at various times. In normal pregnancy fetal sex can be determined by testing mother;s blood at 7 weeks. In case of in-vitro fertilization, it could be determined before the embryo is implanted.

Varies: Baby must cooperate. The parts are defined by 12 wks but technicians are seldom able to find reliable landmarks until 18-20wks. Some may sooner with experience. However, the "turtle must come out from hiding" to make the distinguishing feature evident. I have seen some couples surprised at delivery when an ultrasound gender reveal was wrong.
