How effective is botox in treating headache?

12 doctors weighed in across 5 answers

Depends: Botox paralyzes muscles, so if your headaches are triggered by muscular contractions or are muscle/tension headaches, and if the injections paralyze the correct trigger location, then Botox can be a godsend (or so patients tell me). Neurologists are the specialists that use Botox for headaches, not plastic surgeons, derm, or ENT injectors, though we see cosmetic patients with headaches gone.

Depending on : The location of the headache. It can be very effective. Ones directly between the eyebrows respond quite well to botox.

Depends: Some types of headaches can be responsive to botox. Be aware that headaches have a variety of sources and should be investigated by a physician.

Chronic Migraine: Unfortunately, Botox has not been shown to be effective for any other headache type (e.g. episodic migraine, tension-type headache, cluster headache, sinus headache) as yet.
