It depends: It depends on what is causing the respiratory depression. If alcohol or a drug, one needs to stop the alcohol or drug. If a medical illness, the illness needs treatment. The patient may need to be artificially ventilated in the meantime. There are medicines to reverse opiate overdoses -- this can be done in emergency rooms or on medical units.
