It happens...: In about 1 in 100 women, the baby's head compresses a nerve (often the sciatic) as it passes through the pelvic outlet. More likely in first pregnancies and prolonged 2nd stage of labor. Women with nerve injury spent more time pushing in the semi-fowler-lithotomy position than women without. Average duration of symptoms is usually ~2 months.
