Yes to both: 1 in 3 women will have spotting or bleeding in the first 3 or 4 months of pregnancy. This is usually due to implantation bleeding and does not represent a problem.

Common: Vaginal bleeding is common at all stages of pregnancy. The source is almost always maternal, rather than fetal. Bleeding may result from disruption of decidual blood vessels or from cervical or vaginal lesions. Implantation of the pregnancy can cause spotting or bleeding in the first trimester. Your doctor can determine the cause of your spotting after history, physical, and any lab tests/imaging.
