Anti-herpes drugs: Take an anti-herpes medication at the first sign of a cold sore (preferably when you feel the tingling, but before you see the lesion). One way to do it is to take 2000 mg of valacyclovir right away and another 2000 mg 12 hours later. This will shorten the duration of infection.
