Depends on cause: If you are speaking of the common melasma that so many women get, it usually begins in teenage years or early adulthood associated with hormones and sun exposure. We see if frequently begin with birth control pills or pregnancy.

Go away dark spots: Hyperpigmentation may be caused by chronic inflammation. I al ways imagine that any time there is inflamm, the melanocytes (pigment cells) flock to the area thinking there is a party going on and just dont leave. I like rx hydroquinone and retinoids plus sunscreen. Sunscreen and hats are the most important thing. I love obagi nuderm for this and there are botanicals too but don't work as well.

Sunscreen, Retinols: In treating hyperpigmentation, it is extremely important to minimize sun exposure through sun protection and sunscreen. Products containing retinols may help to even pigmentation. There are a number of medicines, like hydroquinone, that help reduce excess pigment. A newer product called elure contains lignin peroxidase a natural chemical found in trees that bleaches the color of tree bark.

Following irritation: The body forms increased amounts of pigment from a variety of mechanisms. Some are hormonal like melasma or related to endocrine diseases like adrenal gland dysfunction or liver disease. Other causes are side effects from medications or genetic diseases. Most of what we see clinically is caused by sun damage.
