Sprain injury assoc: A sprain usually has an associated injury related to it, ie fall and ankle hurts and then goes away, arthritis is a chronic disease meaning last for years and usually not associated with and injury and involved more than one joint, usually.

An Xray: They can present in a very similar fashion with pain, stiffness and swelling. An xray is needed to see if there is arthritis in the joint. Treatment of the two conditions is initially the same, rest, ice and over the count nsaids like advil or aleve (naproxen).
