Gallstones: You should see your doctor to determine if you have had an attack of biliary colic. When the acute attack of biliary colic subsides, preventive therapy should be considered to remove the offending stones to prevent recurrent attacks and other complications. Cholecystectomy (gb removal) is the most commonly recommended modality. Others include bile acids, chemical dissolution, and eswl.

Surgery: Gallstones have to be confirmed with an abdominal ultrasound before surgical intervention. Surgery is not needed if there are no symptoms. If symptoms persist and become recurrent, then surgery is almost a must.
