Many things.: A loud sudden noise can cause hearing loss. Trauma to the ear can rupture the tympanic membrane (eardrum) also causing hearing loss. Sometimes after a viral illness you may have hearing loss (labryinthitis). Bottom line is that is something to see your physician for, since there are many different causes. Some are reversible, some not.

Depends on the type: Hearing loss can occur from mechanical or nerve problems. A wax impaction, fluid in the middle ear or severe pressure changes in the middle ear can all cause sudden hearing change. Viral inflammation of the hearing nerve or blocked vessels supplying the nerves of hearing can also cause a sudden change in acuity. You should see a doctor and get a hearing test. In nerve changes, time is important.
